Petra

Hi! My Name Is Petra

Sweet Adele, now named Petra after the ancient treasure saved from the sand, is back with us.  She was saved from animal services 6 years ago when she turned up heartworm positive. We treated her and prepared her for a forever home.

Petra was adopted and all was well. Or so we thought.

Almost exactly 6 years after adoption, we received a phone call last week that her family was moving, and they could not take her because they couldn't keep her outside at their new residence.

We were heartbroken. We do our best to ensure that our dogs go to forever homes where they are kept as part of the family. We do interviews and vet checks and check-ins to make sure the adoption is going successfully. In her case, a volunteer even knew and vouched on behalf of the family. Sadly, even as stringent and tedious as we are, people lie, and situations aren't always what they seem.
Despite the contract that her family signed at adoption, she was kept as an outdoor dog and was returned to us absolutely filthy with clumps of hair everywhere. She wasn't even allowed in the cab of their truck. Instead, she was brought back to us tethered in the back of a horse trailer. We immediately had her groomed. She is on her way to feeling better.

Adele is around 12 years old. She will be going to live and spend the rest of her days with a wonderful fospice volunteer who is known for taking on senior dogs in need of a soft-landing place. She will return to being treated as a true member of a family and not just as livestock.

Petra, we are so sorry that these last few years have not been as happy for you as we had hoped. We will ensure you will be spoiled beyond measure from here on out ♥️

Sweet Petra has been checked out by our vet, she is about 20-pounds overweight and is now Ehrlichia positive, a tick-borne illness. We have already started treatment and have started her on an anti-inflammatory for her arthritis. She is already moving around easier. The pictures show how she looked before she was adopted, how she was returned, and how fresh she looks after being groomed. Thank you to our friends at Spa for Paws for helping her feel SO much better.
