Twiggy was picked up as a stray. She was emaciated and we took her make sure there wasn't anything medically wrong with her to make her so skinny. Since she is a small dog, it is possible she was simply lost for a couple of days. Small dogs and senior dogs tend to drop weight very quickly if they are left on their own to find food. Most dogs are conditioned to being fed every day by their owners and do not have survival skills for finding food.
We got her to the vet, and it turns out that Twiggy had a pyometra. That is a very serious infection of the uterus that can cause death if not treated. This is another reason why female dogs and cats NEED to be spayed. Once she had surgery, Twiggy felt better and started eating more. So far she has gained 1 pound!
